@systlin SPOODER SILK SHAWL

https://www.vam.ac.uk/articles/golden-spider-silk

I regularly stare at this with an emotion that can only really be described as ‘avaricious craft lust’

I would do UNSPEAKABLE things to be able to touch this

Listen I generally fail to understand the stuff rich people spend money on but this? I would absolutely pay stupid money to be able to touch this

Just once

Also. Also I want to meet the people who’s job description was 'go out and Bother about a million Big Spooders’

The fact that they had people paid good money to catch lady spiders and then the carefully designed Spider Box to contain the spider while they reeled the silk? And then carefully released the unharmed lady spiders in the same spot they were caught with a nice insect lunch for their trouble?

Like damn I’m in the wrong line of work.

Literally.

Imagine being able to dunk on all your classmates at a high school reunion like 'i live in Madagascar and spend my time wrangling big ol’ spiders into providing me with a substance worth more than it’s weight in gold. Also we’re revolutionising materials science but that’s beside the point’

That glowing golden color fucks me UP

Like that’s not dyed that’s just the color it is! Look at it! It’s magnificent!

I saw the shawl in person when it was at the Art Institute of Chicago shortly after it was made, and it’s spectacular – museum lighting doesn’t quite do it justice and it was off in a weird area, but well worth going to find it. The luminosity was still off the charts, and it’s extremely intricate. I spent probably half an hour in front of it, studying all the little details. If you get wind that it’s being exhibited near you it’s absolutely worth the trip to see it.

see, I don’t even disagree with the assertion that there’s a lot of xenophobia in the West and that some of it is against Russians for very little reason that has to do with a particular person themself, but I am very suspicious that, when it comes to the former Eastern bloc, it’s only ever Russians that USians will hold this conversation about. there is, in fact, a lot of xenophobia, also applied against other Eastern Europeans, especially Ukrainians right now, and I’d imagine a lot against Central Asians too, and don’t even get me started on Caucasians (from the actual Caucasus). but every time a post on here gets popular it’s somehow solely about Russians.

I’m not even directing anyone to include both, or saying that you can’t make a post just about Russians, but it is significant to me that this is an observable phenomenon. and that it follows the mass media, who have also consistently been publishing articles and opinion pieces about how terrible the treatment and life of “regular Russian people”, while in the case of Ukraine and other countries only concerning themselves with the government, and barely ever consider the position and the feelings of the Ukrainian people.

and in the end it really feels like empire core inter-unity (which is a form of solidarity, I suppose). am I trying to police that? not really, I don’t have the energy to, but it gets very annoying, because I know from personal experience people on here can call my country and neighbors (among which are Ukraine) “toilet Russian”, and not only will a post calling that out not get anywhere close to the numbers a post about Russians would, it most likely wouldn’t even materialize

Every once in a while a new music genre gets invented and people from all different countries are like this slaps we got to start doing that and combine it with our own music styles and that’s beautiful

There was a time when China got really into jazz and so did Ethiopia. Cambodia got really into Psychedelic Rock to the point that there’s now an contemporary American band specialised in this style of music. There’s a band from my hometown in Germany singing in Spanish and I know several early 20th century Japanese and Chinese artists were doing the same. Zambia had it’s own Rock movement. Ska is from Jamaica but I know Japanese, Basque and Spanish ska bands. You can probably find hip hop and rap in all languages of the world by now. I watched an entire documentary on the history of South American rock and roll. There is a Cuban orchestra mixing Mozart and guajira. Finnish tango. German covers of Irish folk music. Blues from the Sahara.

I love metal and I have a playlist dedicated to bands that are inspired by their native cultures, the Hu is the biggest band on there, they use a lot of traditional Mongolian instruments and use throat singing. Bloodywood got quite popular on tiktok for making Indian inspired nu metal and it’s so good. There’s something so beautiful and inspiring about taking a genre of music so (often) Americanised and turning it into a beautiful fusion.

not me being introduced to the Hu only 2 weeks ago by a friend live truly finds a way and just this once with at least severely limited alghorytmic help lol

“i wish i could go on platonic dates with people”

It’s called a queerplatonic partner.

image

Oh you mean like having friends?

No that’s something different. I am firm on the idea of a platonic date. Friends is just people you don’t hate as much. Platonic peeps are actually people you care about.

image

Of all of Zuckerberg’s crimes, the complete destruction of the meaning of the word ‘friend’ is the most heinous.

DOES THE WORD AQUAINTANCE MEAN NOTHING TO YOU FOOLS?????????????????????

WHY DON’T WE JUST GO PISS ON THE POOR WHILE WE’RE AT IT

i hate english lacking familiarity level distinctions for less-than-friends but more than just people you coexist with aside from aquaintance and colleague but the latter is institution-specific yall need a word for colleague-from-outside-of-work lets reclaim the word friend for serious purposes only ffs

What is it about fics then, where characters always, ALWAYS, have a spare toothbrush conveniently just hanging about in bathroom cupboards for that time someone is, usually unexpectedly, staying the night?

I have lived a few decades now, and I have never known anyone who keeps spare toothbrushes. Is it really common??

(via why-bless-your-heart)

usually toothbrushes are sold in 3packs here so 50% of the time we have spares lying around (or you can just sanitize your own with boiling water before and after use it's literally no big deal)

“Madeleine Silarjuangat”

This is the last large solar system I made. I created it for a custom order so I personalised it with my client who offered it to his wife for her birthday last year ♥️
This embroidery is called “Madeleine Silarjuangat”, which means “Madeleine’s world” in Inuit. My client lives in Canada, he wanted to name his embroidery after his wife, the Inuit language has a rich history of stars and legends about life above.
Thank you again Kirt!

I hope to have more opportunities like this to create more unique and custom orders, it is always very interesting and challenging for me to have to work directly for a client.
